Weld County, located in northern Colorado with its county seat in Greeley, falls within the 19th Judicial District. The county’s trial court system includes a District Court and a County Court, both housed at the Weld County Courthouse complex, along with 24 municipal courts spread throughout the county’s cities and towns. The Clerk of the Combined Courts serves as the official custodian for all District Court and County Court records, which encompass criminal, civil, family law, probate, juvenile, traffic, and small claims cases. Whether someone needs a divorce decree, a criminal disposition, or a probate filing, understanding which office holds the record and how to request it is essential to a successful search.
Colorado’s statewide judicial branch provides several pathways for locating court case information. Through ColoradoCourts.us, the public can access a docket search tool, find court contact information by county, and review filing fee schedules. The Colorado Judicial Branch also maintains an online records request form that routes directly to the appropriate court clerk. For broader case searches, the Judicial Branch offers limited online access through approved third-party vendors that provide real-time register-of-actions data from county and district courts statewide. Records can also be inspected in person at the clerk’s office, requested by mail, or obtained through direct contact with the court where the case was filed.

Are Court Records Public in Weld County?
Colorado law creates a general presumption of public access to court records. The Colorado Open Records Act (CORA), codified at C.R.S. § 24-72-201 et seq., requires public agencies to make records available for inspection and copying. Court records in criminal proceedings are further governed by the Colorado Criminal Justice Records Act (CJRA), C.R.S. § 24-72-301 et seq., which authorizes the custodian to establish reasonable rules for inspection and to deny access where disclosure is prohibited by law, Supreme Court rule, or existing court order, or where it would be contrary to the public interest.
The Colorado Supreme Court’s Chief Justice Directive 05-01 and the Public Access to Information and Records Rule (P.A.I.R.R.) set the specific framework for court records access. Under these policies, a clerk may restrict access to court files or portions of files in certain circumstances.
Records typically exempt from public disclosure include:
- Adoption records
- Juvenile proceedings (governed by the Children’s Code, C.R.S. § 19-1-301 et seq.)
- Mental health proceedings
- Records sealed by court order
- Ongoing criminal investigation files
- Trade secrets and proprietary information
- Victim and witness identifying information
- Records containing personal information whose disclosure would constitute an invasion of privacy
Colorado law also requires the redaction of certain personal identifiers — such as Social Security numbers, bank account numbers, tax returns, and insurance information — from publicly available court records. A $20.00 fee may apply when redaction of documents is necessary before release.
