Pueblo County is located in south-central Colorado, with the city of Pueblo serving as the county seat. The county’s judicial system operates through a combined court facility that houses both the District Court and the County Court, along with a separate Municipal Court for city ordinance matters. Records generated across all of these courts document every stage of a case, from the initial filing through final judgment, and they serve as the authoritative account of legal proceedings in the county.

Individuals looking for Colorado court records can start with the clerk’s office at the relevant courthouse, use in-person public access terminals, or submit requests through the Colorado Judicial Branch’s online tools. ColoradoCourts.us may assist users in identifying publicly available court case information and connecting to appropriate state judicial resources.

Are Court Records Public in Pueblo County?

Most Pueblo County court records are open to public inspection. The Colorado Open Records Act (CORA), codified at Colorado Revised Statutes §24-72-201 et seq., establishes a broad presumption of public access to government records. For court records specifically, access is governed by Chief Justice Directive 05-01 and the Supreme Court Rule on Public Access to Information and Records (P.A.I.R.R.), which permit inspection by any person at reasonable times.

Notwithstanding that general rule, several categories of records are restricted or confidential:

  • Juvenile records — governed by the Children’s Code (C.R.S. §19-1-301 et seq.) and CJD 05-01
  • Sealed and expunged records — accessible only by court order
  • Records made confidential by statute, court order, or federal law
  • Attorney-client privileged materials
  • Personally identifying information such as Social Security numbers, which must be redacted by the filing party before submission
  • Probate files — certain probate records carry restricted access under Colorado law
  • Records of ongoing investigations

The Criminal Justice Records Act (C.R.S. §24-72-301 et seq.) separately addresses court records in criminal proceedings. Under §24-72-305, a custodian may deny inspection if disclosure is prohibited by law, a Supreme Court rule, an existing court order, or if it would be contrary to the public interest. Anyone denied access may seek judicial review.

Custodians at the Pueblo Combined Court may also implement reasonable local policies to protect records and prevent interference with court operations. If you need access to a record that has been restricted, you may file a motion with the court requesting access.
