How Do I Look Up Warrants in Colorado?
ColoradoCourts.us is not a consumer reporting agency as defined by the FCRA and does not provide consumer reports. All searches conducted on ColoradoCourts.us are subject to the Terms of Service and Privacy Notice.
You can use ColoradoCourts.us to locate a warrant in Colorado, as it compiles publicly available information reported by Colorado's courts and law enforcement agencies into a single search. A search reveals the warrant type, issuing court, case number, alleged offense, and bail or bond amount, when available.
Colorado's 64 counties each operate independent sheriff's offices and court clerks, and the state does not maintain a free public court records portal. The Colorado Judicial Branch website provides a Docket Search for checking upcoming court dates, but case records themselves — including register-of-actions data for criminal filings — are only available through paid third-party vendors authorized by the Judicial Department. That paywall, combined with the absence of a statewide warrant aggregator, means that someone trying to verify a warrant's existence would otherwise have to know which county issued it and either pay for a commercial records search or call that county's sheriff or court clerk directly.
A consolidated search eliminates that guesswork by pulling warrant record data from across the state's fragmented system into a single lookup, regardless of which county originated the case.
Are Warrants Public Information in Colorado?
Colorado handles public access to criminal records differently from most states. Rather than covering everything under a single open-records law, the state splits authority between two statutes. The Colorado Open Records Act (CORA), codified at C.R.S. § 24-72-201 et seq., declares that all public records shall be open for inspection — but then explicitly excludes criminal justice records from its scope. Those records fall instead under the Colorado Criminal Justice Records Act (CCJRA), C.R.S. § 24-72-302 et seq., which sets a separate and more restrictive disclosure standard.
Under the CCJRA, "records of official actions" — a defined term that includes arrests, indictments, charges, and judicial proceedings — must be open to public inspection (§ 24-72-303). An arrest warrant that has been executed and returned, or a bench warrant docketed in a criminal case, falls within this category. The custodian of those records, however, retains broad discretion under § 24-72-305 to deny inspection of criminal justice records that are not official actions if disclosure would be "contrary to the public interest." Search warrants, investigative files, and sealed grand jury materials routinely fall on the restricted side of that line.
The practical effect is that a warrant tied to an existing public case — a bench warrant for failure to appear, an arrest warrant on filed charges — is accessible. But the CCJRA gives custodians enough latitude that access is never automatic, and the standard for denial is more permissive than CORA's. Requesters who are refused can challenge the denial in district court, but the burden of navigating that process falls on the requester. Records that do exist in the court system may also be behind a paywall: the Judicial Branch does not offer free online case lookups and instead directs the public to authorized commercial vendors.
How to Search for a Warrant in Colorado
- Use ColoradoCourts.us. Our Instant Warrant Lookup presents you with warrant record data compiled from available public resources in one convenient search. When available, you can find warrant type, issuing court, case number, alleged offense, and bail/bond amount, among other details, depending on the record type and issuing county.
- Search state court records through authorized vendors. The Colorado Judicial Branch does not offer a free public case-search tool. Instead, it licenses real-time register-of-actions data to three commercial providers: LexisNexis Colorado Courts, Background Information Services (BISI), and Tessera Data. These services cover civil, criminal, domestic, and traffic cases across county and district courts and allow searches by name or case number, but all charge fees. The Judicial Branch's own Docket Search is free and useful for confirming upcoming court dates, though it does not display detailed case records or warrant status.
- Call the county sheriff's office or clerk of court. For warrant verification outside of the commercial platforms, a direct inquiry to the county where the case may have originated remains the most reliable free option. Have the subject's full legal name, date of birth, and the likely county of issuance ready. The County Sheriffs of Colorado directory provides contact information for all 64 offices.
- Visit in person. Court clerk offices in Colorado accept walk-in requests during business hours. If you are checking on a warrant issued for yourself, appearing at a sheriff's office or courthouse carries a risk of arrest on the outstanding warrant.
- Retain an attorney. A licensed attorney can make confidential inquiries with the court or district attorney's office and can file a motion to recall a warrant without exposing the subject to immediate arrest.
How Long Is a Warrant Active in Colorado?
Arrest warrants and bench warrants in Colorado do not expire. They remain active until the subject is arrested, surrenders, or a court grants a motion to recall the warrant. Under C.R.S. § 16-3-305(6), a search warrant must be executed within 14 days after its date. If it is not, the warrant is void. Execution of a dwelling search warrant is further restricted to between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. unless a judge expressly authorizes another time for good cause — and following 2023 reforms (SB 23-254), officers must knock and announce before entry except under narrow circumstances involving an imminent threat to life.
Colorado Warrant Records by County
Warrants in Colorado are issued at the county level, through the state's 22 judicial districts, and maintained by county sheriff's offices and court clerks. Colorado does not operate a centralized, public-facing statewide warrant database. The Judicial Branch licenses case data to commercial vendors, but there is no free government portal that aggregates warrant records across all 64 counties. Searching for a warrant requires identifying the issuing county — or checking counties one by one if the jurisdiction is unknown.
The table below lists all 64 Colorado county sheriff's offices (including the Broomfield Police Department, which serves the combined city and county of Broomfield in lieu of a separate sheriff), with addresses and phone numbers sourced from the County Sheriffs of Colorado.
